Coupon Organization Ideas

There are 4 levels of organization SouthernSavers recommends. They go up in order of time involved to organize but they also each make the time spent finding the coupon faster. So you decide the system best for you and the time trade off.

#1“Not Cutting” Keeping your Inserts Whole
When you get your weekly inserts write the date bigger on the front page of the insert. Then get a large 13 pocket accordion file system and put all the inserts from this week together in one pocket. Next week put those inserts in the next pocket of the folder. As the weeks go on you have all the inserts from each week together organized back by the date that they came out. If you buy more than one paper, just put all the inserts no matter how many into the same pocket. Now when you come to Southern Savers you will use the SS dates that are next to coupons on the weekly deal posts to find each coupon and cut it out before going to the store.
This is where I live. There are not any more hours in my day and this is a compromise with my husband. I do not recommend this system to anyone that hates to miss a clearance or closeout deal in the store. You can take your large file with you but you will spend way to long finding the coupon you need (if you even can find it). The upside to this system is that the only time spent on it, is the time you spend getting ready for your trip. Usually takes me about 15 minutes to cut any coupons needed for a trip.
You will also need to have #2 to keep any coupons that you cut and don’t use or any printable coupons in.

#2Canceled Check File:
This is one small step towards organization. Get a small accordion file with 13 pockets these are $1 at Target normally. Leave the front pocket empty and as you plan your trip you put the coupons there that you will use that trip, then in the remaining pockets label the tabs on them according to the areas that you use the most. I use: Baby, Canned/Boxed Goods, Cereals, Desserts/Baking, Snacks/Drinks, Other food, Toiletries, Drugs, Paper goods, Cleaning products, Refrigerated, and lastly Frozen foods.
I DO NOT recommend organizing by alphabetical or expiration date. If you choose alphabetical then you are the only person in the world that knows where that coupon is. B for Betty C for Crocker or P for Potatoes. If you try expiration date then you are helpless if you need to find the coupon. (It is okay to let a coupon expire by the way, you will probably get another very soon and it really means that they item never came on a great sale).
This system is fast on the time it takes to organize them, you cut put them in twelve stacks and shove them in. It is slow on the time it takes you in the store. Your stacks will be large. If you need to find a coupon for canned chicken you might have 30-40 coupons to look through. Another problem with this system arises if you get more than one copy of the paper. Your stacks of coupons are now really large and time in the store slows even further.

#3Make Your Own Box
Yet another step closer to mastering organization. For this system find any box you like. I recommend something that can fit easily in the top part of the grocery cart. Then buy or make your own dividers. You can go to town with dividers and make categories for anything you like. You will increase the amount of time it takes to organize your cut coupons, but in the store you will have smaller stacks to sort through to find a particular coupon. I made my own box and used a 3×5 index card file box, they sell dividers for it and it had a lid! For my categories when I finally moved out of the box I had over 40 dividers with everything from Baby to Personal Care Supplies I don’t use (just in case it was free).
The only downside with this system is that no matter what size box you pick, a box is a box and it will not expand. If you get a lot of inserts you will not be able to get every coupon inside at some point.

#4Three Ring Binder
This system is for the truly serious and devoted. You need a 1.5 inch or larger 3 ring binder, baseball card organizing pages, and section divider tabs. Label the dividers again by location in the store and then start to put coupons into the baseball card pockets. Place your coupons individually (put multiples behind it) in the slots so that you are able to see every coupon. I put a coupon facing the front and a different coupon facing the back to maximize space. For the dividers, you are not limited by 12 sections so you can go crazy with tabs if you like. You can even get a little zipper bag (sold to hold pencils) to put in the front to hold your coupons for that trip and a pair of scissors.
This system takes the most time to get everything organized. It is coupon origami getting some of the large coupons in the slots. However, in the store if you were racing against anyone in a lower system you would win hands down. If you need to know if you have a particular coupon it will take you about 5 seconds! You will also be ready to make a run to the store for a quick deal rather then feeling like you have to sit down and prepare.
A Few tips for this system:
If you have more than one coupon for the same item, put the ones that expire first towards the front in the pocket
Buy a folder that zips up!! If you hold a binder upside down the coupons will fall out the top.
Look for a binder that has a 6 pocket accordion system too. Now if you cut and don’t have time to file the coupons you can still have them with you.
My Favorite Binder I found at Office Depot, they don’t have one of their site so here is a similar one if you are interested in cost and features. An idea of groupings that gets more organized than the above 12:
Baby, Drugs, Breads, Cereals, Snacks, Meat, Canned/Boxed goods, Condiments/Seasoning, Desserts/Baking goods, Other Food, Frozen, Refrigerated, Cooking Helpers (Ziploc bags, aluminum foil etc.), Paper Goods, Cleaning Goods, Other Household (bug spray etc.), Store Specific (Store coupons, CVS ECB’s etc.), Body Care (soap, razors, deodorant etc.), Tooth care, Hair Care, Facial/Makeup

Kid's Meal Deals - Near You!

There is a website called www.kidsmealdeals.com
that allows you to search for places where kids can eat for free based on the zip code you are in at the time (this could really be helpful if you are away from home on a family trip). I thought it would be a great way to save some cash this summer while the kids are out of school - You can eat out more often if you know where to go to get some free meals. You can narrow your search by days of the week or by cuisine.

Enjoy!

If there is a restaurant in your area that is not listed, please add it to their suggestions, this is a fairly new website.

Target Coupons

Did you know that you can print coupons from the Target website and then use them at Publix. And if you have a manufacturers coupons and a target coupond...Publix will allow you to use BOTH!

Publix Trip and QUICK DINNER RECIPE

So here it is...I needed and wanted a couple of things that I didn't have coupons for so, sadly, it made my out of pocket total a little more than I would have like, but I am so excited to try the Sea Pak Talapia...YUM, might fix it for lunch. Anywhoo, I also wanted to make this SUPER easy deep dish pizza recipe I found yesterday (I actually had time to read a magazine yesterday while sitting outside with my little one, he was playing with the dog, bugs, rocks, etc.. YEAH!!)..Anyway I'll post the recipe at the end of the rant :)
So total before sales and coupons - $117.23
My out of pocket total - $41.29 (including tax)
My Savings - $75.82
Okay here is a YUMMY and SUPER EASY (a quick go to meal)...
Upside-Down Deep Dish Pizza
4 servings
Prep time - 10 minutes
Cook time - 25 minutes
1 lb ground beef (I used morning star veggie crumbles)
1 jar Pasta Sauce (i used Ragu, because it is what I had in my pantry)
1 package (10oz) frozen chopped, thawed and squeezed dry (used a kitchen towel)
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 can (11 oz) refrigerated pizza dough
1. Brown ground beef; drain. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning) Stir in Pasta sauce, bring to a boil. transfer into baking dish (the Rachael Ray frying pan i use can go into the oven...so it made it a one pot meal)
2. Top with broccoli, then cheese. Press dough over dish, sealing edges.
3. Bake at 376 degrees for 20 minutes or until crust is golden. Let it stand for 10 minutes.
VIOLA!!! DINNER IS SERVED!

My Favorite Store...Publix

I HEART PUBLIX!!!!!

Short and VERY SWEET post. I saved $117.64 and spent $33.20 (including tax).

Did you know that Publix will also take Rite Aid coupons?? yep, Today i had a $5 off of $25. So go get yours.. http://content.riteaid.com/rabrand/email_coupon_4G.pdf

Also, if you receive the stack of papers in your mail box that has coupons, flyer's, and such...that you may actually just toss...DON'T, Albertson's almost ALWAYS has $5 off $50....My bill should have been $28.20 instead of $33.20...but I used one of my $5 off $50 on my momma's meat stash...until later...Happy shopping!

YES!! I am still a vegetarian! LOL

So there isn't an Albertson's near my mom and as I previously posted they tend to have good meat and seafood deals, but everything else tends to be a little more expensive...Anywhoo..I mentioned the deals to my mom and she wanted me to pick up a few things, since she has Aiden for the day I figured I'd be nice and buy meat (Seasoned Boneless Pork Chops, Sirloin Steak, and Country Style Pork Ribs) a total of 9 packages. She has a deep freezer, which as most of you already know, keeps meat fresh/frozen for much longer....So the following meat was Buy1Get2 free, (the sale by date is still multiple days away....so the meat is still very fresh) and then I had a $5 of $50. So the grand total was $45.15, and the total savings $103.

CVS

So CVS ending up paying me a couple of CVS bucks today and I got 5 items...I'll post how later...and how Aiden made it an Adventure...

TIPS

Get 2 copies of every free booklet that Publix offers...stop buy 2 publix if possible and pick them up. Sometimes they carry different ones. Don’t forget the (Yellow and Green Sales Flyers) Advantage Buy Deals or the Green advantage buy deals. A New Green Advantage Buy Flyer starts 5/30. Look for those deals later in the week sales paper.
Also try to get, Save Money Save The Planet, Greenwise, there is an organic postcard style booklet, and A New summer savings book (which isn't typically on the rack with all of the others), I have seen in right inside the doors and i have seen it in a stand near customer service...If you can not find these...ASK customer Service, they will gladly look for you and many times they have EXTRA behind the counter, remember to ask for 2.

www.SouthernSavers.com - TIPS

RP - stands for the Insert RED PLUM, that comes in the Sunday paper
SS - stands for SMARTSOURCE, that also comes in the Sunday paper

The date behind these abbreviation (example, RP 5/17) is the date of the Sunday paper where the insert was found.

***When you get you inserts in your Sunday paper, IMMEDIATELY put the date of the paper on the front of the insert so you can easily locate the insert that SuperSavers is referring to!

Needed Bananas for Aiden..okay and FREE plates

So I made a stop by Publix on my way home this evening..Aiden needed fruit for breakfast (plus I wanted more free paper plates/bowls...less dishes for me to wash).

This is what I bought.

3 bananas
1 medium white onion
1 package - Dixie paper bowls
1 package - Dixie paper plates
total out of my pocket....67 cents!

But here is the story. Paper plates B1g1 and I had two $1.00 target coupons and 2 $1 manufact. coupons....cashier said "you can't use all of these because it will then make the product free" I politely and soft spokeningly (a Cindy word) (loudness sounds confrontational) reminded her that Publix allows you to "stake" manufact. and competitors...she said "i can call someone for customer service if you want"....Since there was a line forming..and I sincerely try to be a friendly coupon lady and respectful of others time...I said that's okay and asked for my total...I paid $2.67...the bag girl, said I would go to customer service (which I needed to anyway..because remember last night i forgot to take a couple of coupons with me). ANYWHOOO...Walked over to customer service desk...SWEET customer service lady apologized and explained the policy (the one I tried to tell the cashier) and gladly gave me the $2 back that the cashier insist i pay...so VIOLA...with a couple extra steps...67 cents! Plus got my money for the coupons I forgot to use last night :) Thank you very nice customer service lady...i so tried to recall her name for this post..but it was the Publix at Orange and Michigan :)

OOOPPPSS!

I forgot $4 worth of veggie mroning star coupons at home...but quess what?? I can take them back in the morning along with my receipt and Publix will give me $4 back...

So this was a little trip, but I want to explain how it work...

I spent $16.22 and saved $22.46 (after I get my $4 back tomorrow that will change to spending $12.22 and saving $26.46)

Bought 2 Kraft Salad Dressing. They were B1G1...which made them $2.93 a piece the I had 2 $1 manufact. coupons and 2 $1 Target coupons..which means I earned $1.07 on the Dressing.

Same Exact scenario on the Dixie bowls and plates (which I volunteered to bring to Aiden day school party on Thursday) $2.93 B1G1 with 2 manufact. coupons and 2 Target coupons...which meant I earned $1.07

I bought 2 Hefty Tall 20 count Garbage Bags for $3.69 each. I had 2 $1 target coupons and 2 $1 manufact. coupons...so I paid $3.38 for two boxes of Hefty Garbage bags.

***so if you take my overages from the Dixie bowls/plate and salad dressing and you and in what i paid for the garbage bags...I actually paid $1.24 for all the forementioned items (too bad I couldn't stop there)

But then came the expensive Veggie stuff we eat, and we needed veggie bacon for breakfast, corndogs for Aiden's lunch, and chicken strips for a yummy chicken and rice casserole I will make this week....so here is how I got stuck paying $16.22

Veggie Bacon = $3.79
Veggie Bacon = $3.79
Veggie Corn Dogs = $3.99
Veggie Chicken Strips = $5.99

total on veggie product + $1.24 from other products = $18.80
then I used $3 in veggie coupons = $15.80 plus tax= $16.22
and saved $22.46

AHHHH-CHOOOO

Sunday's Shopping Trips and Tips

The photo above is from my trip to Albertsons, CVS, and Walgreens. I personally think Albertson's is way to expensive (and I just don't like the one near me) so I never shop there...but yesterday they had a shrimp sale...Extra Large Shrimp $14.99 buy 1 and get 2 FREE...

Total I spent $45 at these 3 stores and saved $128. CVS and Walgreens have items ever week that when you purchase them you get a coupon back for money to use on your next purchase (for example: $5 off your next purchase) so sometimes I have to do more than one transaction so I can get the coupon and then use it to buy the next item to get another coupon...In order to get the coupons to print at CVS you MUST get a CVS card...so go to WWW.CVS.com and register for your free card today or sign up for on the next time you are in CVS and then go online to register it so they will also send you coupons in the mail!! Like $4 off $20....

The above picture is from my shopping trip to Publix last week. I must admit that prior to couponing I had stopped shopping at Publix as much because i was doing what I thought at was saving money...boy was I mislead...PUBLIX is the place where you want to be for grocery's...the majority of Publix takes all competitors coupons and you can use multiple coupons per item (which means, one competitors, one manufacturers, and one Publix) now granted three for one item doesn't happen that often..but two typed for one happens A LOT...In addition you can use one coupon for each item when it is B1G1 (buy one get one free)...(for example, Dixie plate are B1G1 right now at publix....which means you can print 2 coupons from Target.com and then use 2 manufactures coupons if you have them from past sales ads). It is a good idea to buy at least 2 Sunday papers...I don't worry about cutting all the coupons at that time...I cut as I need them...but it is important to write the date of the newspaper on the FRONT of the coupon insert...so if a website like www.southernsavers.com , refers you to a certain issue on a certain date, you can easily locate it...

Yesterday I went to a variety of stores, Publix, Albertsons, CVS, and Walgreens. I spent a total of $80 and saved $200. In future post I will share more pictures of my loot, as well as, be more specific about amounts spent and saved. Please feel free to ask me any question you may have...i may not have the answer but if I do I will definitely share...I hope you save money, that is my primary reason for this blog!
More to come....

New to the Coupon and Blog World.

Hi Everyone!!
I am new to the coupon on and I am officially addicted. I love matching coupons to what is on sale and I especially LOVE seeing the results at the register. Just to let everyone know I was a little overwhelmed at first. I have always tried to use coupons but the $1 or $2 I used to save in the store never seem to match all of the hassle.
Things have changed for me. I am still a newbie to the world of coupons, but like to thing I am a fast learner...and boy my receipts are encouraging me.
I would like to use this blog to encourage others to enter the "coupon world" with me and save $$$ for you and your family.
Our economy being in a recession SUCKS!! but I am thankful for the lesson I am learning and plan to use for the rest of my life...and couponing is one of those lessons.
